Summer Programs

MCW summer programs are a great way for young musicians of all ages to explore their creativity, try fun new activities, and hone their music skills. Programs are filling fast, register now!

SUZUKI BEGINNER SPECIAL (AGES 4 – 7)2024-02-08T00:54:20-05:00
  • Learn four different instruments – violin, cello, piano, and guitar – in this exceptional two-week program. Using the Suzuki philosophy of shared music-making, children are introduced to the fundamentals of each instrument. Daily group lessons
  • Taught by our certified Suzuki instructors
  • Instruments are provided
  • Parents/caregivers attend class and learn alongside children
  • Ages: 4 – 7 years
  • Dates: July 15th – 26th
    • Monday – Friday
  • Times: 4:00pm – 5:00pm

MUSIC AND ARTS (GRADES K – 6)2024-02-08T00:58:44-05:00
  • Mornings at Music & Arts (9am – 12:30pm) are filled with learning instruments, making music, and unbridling creativity. Violin, guitar, or piano group lessons are offered as well as music production for grades 3-6 and singing with the Summer Chorus. Students give presentations on the last day of each session to share their musical progress.
  • Afternoons (1pm – 3:30pm) are filled with creative movement, musical theater, and maker space classes, directed by our chorus and dance teachers. Students choreograph and perform dance pieces as well as scenes from a popular musical, presenting their collaborations on our Recital Hall stage on the last day of each session.
  • Early drop-off and late pick-up options are available. Continuous supervision is provided by faculty or staff with approved counselors.

VOCAL PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP (GRADES 9-12)2024-02-08T01:25:18-05:00
  • Two-week workshop, directed by Mary Elizabeth Poore, for high school vocalists with a focus on repertoire, technique, diction, and acting.
  • Study various musical theatre styles including Broadway, opera, and operetta
  • Collaborate with a professional accompanist
  • Showcase performance on the final day
  • Taught and directed by Mary Elizabeth Poore. Ms. Poore has performed extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad including at Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress, and has sung with numerous companies including Michigan Opera Theater, Orlando Opera, and Lyric Opera of Cleveland. She has been featured in solo and chamber music recitals around the country, was the soprano soloist for the annual Basically Bach Festival in New York for many years, and has has received numerous awards and accolades during her career. As a dedicated educator, Ms. Poore has taught at MCW for many years and is currently on faculty at the Bel Canto Institute in Florence, Italy.
  • Piano accompaniment by renowned vocal coach Celeste Jamerson. Dr. Celeste Jamerson has extensive experience coaching and accompanying singers in various settings, including school, university, theater, and church.  She was a faculty member of the Vocal Performance Academy at the Music Conservatory of Westchester from 2008-2012.

Middle School Division (grades 5-7)

  • A 2-week ensemble and technique program for Middle School string players (violin, viola, cello, double bass). Students rehearse classic repertoire in large and small ensemble settings, attend technique sessions, and strengthen their musicianship with classes including Fiddle & Improv, and Lab Piano in our new digital classroom. A performance will be held on the final day.
  • Dates: July 1st – July 12th (Closed July 4th)
    • Monday – Friday
  • Times: 9:00am – 3:30pm
  • Tuition: $1,125
    • Tier 1: $1015 if registered by 3/15

A performance will be held on the final day.

  • A 2-week intensive for Middle School students playing concert band instruments (brass, woodwinds, percussion). Students rehearse classic repertoire with the ensemble and improve their musicianship in classes including Music Theory, Conducting, Improv & The Blues, and Lab Piano in our new digital classroom. A performance will be held on the final day.
  • Dates: July 15th – July 26th

MUSIC PRODUCTION WORKSHOP (GRADES 7 – 12)2024-02-08T01:55:35-05:00
  • This one week intensive will cover the fundamentals and methods of digital music production. Students will gain an understanding of digital production workflow before advancing to Logic Pro X and learning microphone techniques utilized in our professional recording studio. They will begin creating a portfolio of original works consisting of electronic music compositions as well as compositions with recorded audio, loops, podcasting, and sequencing. Additional topics offered will include Beat Basics, and Lab Piano in our new digital classroom. No prerequisite but prior experience playing an instrument is preferred.

JAZZ WORKSHOP (GRADES 8 – 12)2024-02-08T01:50:23-05:00
  • A 1-week intensive for students playing jazz band instruments (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, piano, guitar, bass, drum set). Students will perform standard jazz repertoire with the ensemble and broaden their musicianship in classes including Improvisation, Rhythm & Syncopation, Jazz History & Repertoire, Lab Piano in our new digital classroom, and Mindfulness for Musicians. A performance will be held on the final day, Friday July 14th.
  • Earn community service hours! Students ages 14-up have the option to sign up for the prior week, (week of July 15) as a volunteer mentor with the middle school Concert Band program.
  • Students applying are to submit a pre-screening video or recording. Please record one piece or excerpt of your choosing to demonstrate your abilities (1 to 2 minutes) and SCROLL DOWN TO UPLOAD

Application

  • Middle- and High-school students registering for one of our Instrumental/Vocal programs (Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz, Vocal Performance) are to submit a video demonstrating their proficiency on their instrument or voice.
  • Please upload a 1-2 minute video and complete the information. You can record an excerpt, solo piece, or give an otherwise musical demonstration of your abilities.
